Gregory Pappas, a junior at Lake Norman High School won the Iredell Friends of the Library Bookmark Contest.

Gregory's artwork, based on themes from "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee, will be used as the design for limited-edition bookmarks that will be given to people who join the Friends or renew their memberships in 2009. Pappas will also receive a $50 cash prize from the Iredell Friends of the Library.

Second place honors in the contest went to Emily Stamey, a senior at Statesville High School, and third place went to Emory Watts, a junior at Statesville High School.

Pappas' bookmark was designed as two panels. The top panel, rendered in graytones on a white background, shows a flying mockingbird carrying a judge's gavel. The bottom panel, done in color with a blue background, pictures a green-leafed tree and script letters spelling out To Kill a Mockingbird. The bottom panel is framed in red.

Stamey's bookmark, shaded in pastel browns and grays, shows a mockingbird sitting beside a gold pocket watch in a hole in a tree. Watts' design is a dramatic black and white drawing of a big gavel about to strike a mockingbird that is sitting on the sound block.

Forty drawings in all were submitted for the bookmark contest. A poster of the winning designs, as well as 9 more "judges favorites" will be on display at the Iredell County Public Library in Statesville.

"To Kill a Mockingbird" was chosen as the theme for this year's Friends of the Library bookmark contest to tie in with The Big Read, which will be held in Iredell County in February 2009.
