Billed by organizers as NASCAR on two wheels, the Giordana Crossroads Classic, a nine-day professional cycling race, will return to downtown Statesville on Friday evening for the eighth consecutive year.

The Statesville Criterium Bike Race and Festival in Statesville will kick off at 6:15 p.m. with the first of three amateur events. The pro race, which is scheduled to start at 8:45 p.m., features professional cyclists who reach speeds between 40 and 45 mph in the finishing sprint.

Each race is between 25 and 40 miles. The course start/finish will be located on West Broad Street just west of the square. The course route will be a 0.6-mile "L" shape on Meeting, South Center, Court, Cooper and Broad streets. These streets will be closed from 5:15-10 p.m. Friday.

The event is free. Old Time Concessions will provide entertainment for the kids with a giant inflatable slide, a moonwalk and other attractions.

In addition to Statesville, the 2008 Giordana Crossroads Classic will visit Taylorsville, Lenoir, Morganton, Mocksville, Concord, Salisbury, Harrisburg and Winston-Salem.
