Q: I have heard about the body's pH being important, and that being too acidic creates illnesses including cancer. How does the body become acidic and what can be done for this?
It is true that in many cases of illness, including cancer, the body may be acidic. This acidity may create an environment that is cancer friendly but does not actually create cancer. The scale of acid or base is measured using pH which is an abbreviation for the power of hydrogen. The scale is zero to 14 with 7 being neutral. Below 7 is acid and above 7 is basic or alkaline. The human body is normally slightly acidic as saliva or urine pH is about 6.5. When the body becomes more acidic, say 4.5, the body is in trouble. At that pH, oxygen is not readily available for cells of the body. Cancer can occur in an acidic environment that is poorly oxygenated. There are pH strips available to test saliva or urine.
There is a healing concept of dealing with the body's environment or tissue and is referred to as body terrain. The terrain includes things like pH, electrolyte balance and nutrient status. The concept is if you can change the terrain, then you can affect or reverse the illness. A good example of this would a polluted stream. As pollution increases, the environment changes and alters everything including plant, insect, aquatic and land animal life. If you stop the pollution, there can be a reversal back toward the original healthy environment.
The most common reason an individual becomes acidic is due to their diet. Poor dietary choices include sugar, soft drinks, grains and excess meat, fats and alcohol consumption. Soft drinks are both acidic and contain sugar. Diet drinks with artificial sweeteners have their own problems. The occasional soft drink may not be so bad but daily consumption as a replacement for water is unhealthy. The meat connection is that protein is made of amino acids. Overconsumption of protein can increase the body's acidity. Poor dietary choices can lead to acidic pH. This means changing your dietary habits can have a tremendous impact on your health.
There are commercial alkalizing agents available. This includes coral calcium that is basically coral sand composed of calcium carbonate and minerals. The interesting thing about it is that it has the ability to alkalize water, lower surface tension and provide electrons which have tremendous antioxidant power. This ability far exceeds regular calcium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate or baking soda. I have found the packets, similar to a tea bag, that are put in the daily water consumed to be quite useful. In most cases using this product will result in an overall change in the pH of the body.
It is important to note here that increasing pH over 6.5 is not necessarily more healthful. There can be problems with a body that is too alkaline or basic. So if you use coral calcium, discontinue its use when you reach a pH of 6.5 and continue to monitor your pH.
