Magic of Santa defies all doubts

Published: December 12, 2008

Every year, my son, Josh, tries to set Santa up.

He waits until Christmas Eve, then leaves a letter asking Santa for some far-fetched item. One year it was a marshmallow launcher, another year it was a bug catcher. Somehow, Santa always seems to come through.

This year, however, he decided to start his test of faith a little early. In the all-important Letter to Santa, the first words he wrote were:

"Are you really magic? Please tell me the truth."

And so it begins.

He went on to ask for a few of his wishes — rare, hard-to-find Pokemon cards top the list, which should be so much fun for Santa. Do you think the Jolly Old Elf shops on eBay?

Then, he paused and thought for a few minutes. Very seriously, he wrote:

"Also, I would like a picture of you so I can know you're real. Love, Josh."

After a moment of internal debate, he added his last name to the letter, just in case Santa got confused.

Every year, he told me, he was going to ask Santa one question and for one piece of proof. That way, he figures by the time he's a grown-up, he'll have the whole mystery solved.

As far as I'm concerned, there's really no question. Santa has to be magic — who else would be able to find a marshmallow launcher on Christmas Eve?
