It's always tough to get a measure on how good high school football teams really are after just one game.
So without trying to jump to conclusions, let me say that I came away mighty impressed with West Iredell's offense.
I think everyone in the county – and North Piedmont 3A – knows Quan Rucker is a special athlete. He made some spectacular plays at wide receiver last year, getting anywhere from two to 10 or so touches a game.
At quarterback? He's a nightmare for opposing defensive coordinators.
Rucker has legit 4.45 or even 4.4 speed. Combine that with his agility and football instincts, and you know he can beat you on the ground.
What surprised me the most was how good he looked passing the ball. He showed some very nice touch on all the deep and intermediate throws, and only missed on a few flares and short routes. That can be corrected.
Defenses won't be able to load up the box and focus on slowing the running game because Rucker can and will beat you through the air.
This year's offense has the potential to be even better than last year's bunch, and that's a scary thought for the rest of the NPC.
