The problem with Princesses

Published: August 14, 2008

While you won't find it in any medical books, my 4-year-old son has developed a serious allergy in recent months.

It can strike without warning and is very easily irritated. In fact, he only has to look at the offending object before symptoms begin to set in.

My son is allergic to Princesses. Apparently, they give him a rash.

He first announced this strange affliction while we were in Disney World. As his best friend — a girl — ooohed and aaahed over every passing character in a hoop skirt, Ben grew more and more frustrated. Finally, he decided to take action.

"I'm allergic to Princesses," he loudly proclaimed. "They make me itch."

He then explained that, because of this, he was unable to accompany us to say "hi" to any of them. In fact, he preferred not to even look at them and would scowl if one shot him a smile.

When we got home, I thought he'd forget. But he hasn't. Any time someone mentions Princesses, Ben broadcasts his "allergy" like a man warding off poisonous vipers.

"I. Do. Not. Like. Princesses," he says. And for him, that's always Princesses with a capital P.
Sometimes, he also lumps Barbie into this category, but only if she's sporting her formal evening attire.

So, last week, when I saw a princess — fluffy white dress, sparkly crown and all — take the stage during a play at Bible school, I was sure he'd have a problem with it.

Ben, however, was unfazed.

"Mom," he explained, with the patience of someone speaking to a total idiot, "I'm only allergic to real Princesses. That was just someone in a princess suit."

Glad we cleared that up.

Now, if I could only get him to believe the same thing about the Chick-fil-A cow ...
