Students combine science and rap
Greening the Curriculum, a program designed to make science fun and improve students' end-of-grade test scores, gave East Iredell Elementary students a chance to learn about force and motion. With the lyrics written by Jodi-John Pippin, executive director of the Iredell Arts Council, student put what they learned to a rap song.
Lyrics to Simple Machines, UH-HUH...
Well, ya’ know it’s simple and it’s a machine
It makes work easy if you know what I mean.
Like, try to lift a boulder and you’ll work forever,
But watch it start liftin’ when you use, a lever.
UH-HUH, A LEVER, UH-HUH, IT’S SO CLEVER...
WHAT’S MY NAME? SIMPLE. WHAT’S MY NAME? MACHINE.
I MAKE IT EASY TO WORK AND GET THINGS DONE,
SO THERE’S FORCE AND MOTION FOR EVERYONE,
UH-HUH... UH-HUH...
Well, I woke up this morning, tried to put on my shoe
There was too much friction and I didn’t know what to do
So I had an idea, I was livin’ on the edge
I grabbed a shoe horn, ‘cause it’s a wedge.
UH-HUH, A WEDGE, UH-HUH, ON THE EDGE...
WHAT’S MY NAME? SIMPLE. WHAT’S MY NAME? MACHINE.
I MAKE IT EASY TO WORK AND GET THINGS DONE,
SO THERE’S FORCE AND MOTION FOR EVERYONE,
UH-HUH... UH-HUH...
Well, ya’ know when you see a big set of stairs
And your wearing skates, you should be kinda scared
With all that momentum and all that speed
An inclined plane is all you really need.
UH-HUH, A PLANE, UH-HUH, NO PAIN...
WHAT’S MY NAME? SIMPLE. WHAT’S MY NAME? MACHINE.
I MAKE IT EASY TO WORK AND GET THINGS DONE,
SO THERE’S FORCE AND MOTION FOR EVERYONE,
UH-HUH... UH-HUH...
Well, I tried to walk all the way across the town,
But it took me all day and I had a big frown.
So, I tried it on a bike to see how it would feel.
I used less energy with an axle and a wheel.
UH-HUH, A WHEEL AND AXLE, UH-HUH, THERE’S NO HASSLE.
WHAT’S MY NAME? SIMPLE. WHAT’S MY NAME? MACHINE.
I MAKE IT EASY TO WORK AND GET THINGS DONE,
SO THERE’S FORCE AND MOTION FOR EVERYONE,
UH-HUH... UH-HUH...
Well, ya’ know some kids make a big ol’ fuss
And they push you down or they steal your lunch,
But instead of being bossed by a mean ol’ bully,
Set up buckets of water with a rope and a pulley.
UH-HUH, A PULLEY, UH-HUH, NO BULLIES...
WHAT’S MY NAME? SIMPLE. WHAT’S MY NAME? MACHINE.
I MAKE IT EASY TO WORK AND GET THINGS DONE,
SO THERE’S FORCE AND MOTION FOR EVERYONE,
UH-HUH... UH-HUH...
Well, ya’ know one day, I was feeling abstract.
Like Jackson Pollock, I wanted to “splat”!
So I threw the paintball and it made a little dot,
But you should see the splatter when I used a slingshot.
UH-HUH...SPLAT!... UH-HUH...TAKE THAT!
THE FARTHER YOU PULL, THE FASTER IT GOES,
THE LARGER THE MASS, THE BIGGER THE SPLASH,
FOR EVERY ACTION, THERE’S A REACTION,
FOR EVERY ACTION, THERE’S A REACTION,
FOR EVERY ACTION, THERE’S A REACTION....
SPLAT!!!
